After years of anticipation, Mewgenics has officially launched in Early Access on Steam. The game — originally announced in 2012 and long considered a “mythical” project — marks Edmund McMillen’s return to new IP development following the massive success of The Binding of Isaac.

What’s in the Launch Build?

The Early Access version includes:

  • Act 1 with multiple zones and branching paths
  • 14 collar classes to discover and unlock
  • Full breeding system with trait inheritance and mutations
  • Home base management with NPC upgrades
  • Tactical turn-based combat on grid-based maps
  • Procedurally generated adventures with events and bosses

Development History

Mewgenics has had one of the longest development cycles in indie gaming:

  • 2012: First announced by Edmund McMillen
  • 2013-2014: Early development alongside Binding of Isaac DLC
  • 2014: Put on hold as McMillen focused on other projects
  • 2019: Officially revived with a new development team
  • 2024-2025: Active development with community teaser updates
  • 2026: Early Access launch on Steam

What’s Next

The developers have outlined an ambitious roadmap for Early Access:

  • Additional acts with new zones, bosses, and storylines
  • More collar classes and abilities
  • Quality of life improvements based on community feedback
  • Expanded endgame content
  • Full story completion

The game is available now on Steam for PC.
